# How to Play Roulette

Roulette is a game of chance. That means there’s never a surefire way to win, but that’s what makes it so interesting! The fascinating game is very popular around the world but it’s all about knowing how to play to stand any chance of winning.

## The basics of roulette

The rules of roulette are quite simple. A roulette wheel with slots in red or black numbers with 1-36 on them and either one or two green coloured zeroes spins with a white ball. Players take turns placing bets on a table that also features the number 1-36, as well as a green zero and several additional sectors and then the roulette wheel and the ball are spun. Whichever number the ball lands on is the winning number and colour. Now, you may be asking why there are one or two zeroes on the wheel and what the additional sectors are. Don’t worry, you’ll soon find out.

### Types of bets

The two main types of roulette bet that have any major difference to your odds are European and American and the only thing you need to know is that European has one zero so there’s 1 in 37 chances of you landing on a specific number, and American has two zeroes on the wheel so there’s 1 in 38 chances of landing on a specific number.

With that in mind, let’s consider how the table looks. The obvious part is the numbers in their squares. You can place a bet on any individual number on the board, or you can split the roulette bet across two adjacent numbers, like 18 and 21, three numbers, like 0,2 and 3, or four adjacent corner numbers, like 13, 14, 16, and 17. All of these are called inside bets because they’re inside the main part of the table. There’s also the ability to bet on a column, such as 4,5 and 6, 0-3, and two adjacent columns. To place these bets, you have to put your chips in the right place, but splitting the chip across more numbers reduces your prize because the odds are reduced. When you place a bet on a single number and it wins, you win 36 times the bet placed, but if you split that across two numbers you win 17 times the bet, and the win amount goes down the more splitting you do.

The other main type of bet is the outside, which includes the additional sectors around the table and these cover larger groups of numbers. The five common types are red or black, odds or evens, 1-18 and 19-36, first, second or third twelve numbers, and one of the three full rows of numbers. While these options reduce the amount won, they are more likely to win because the odds are far better. For example, the odds of winning by betting on red or black is considered even money, so if you win you double your bet. There are several strategies you can research about which of the outside bets you should settle with, but the most common is betting between whether the number will be red or black, or odds or evens. Depending on which strategy you choose will also help you understand how much you bet on each occasion. There’s plenty of tables with different betting limits so consider which one suits you to place your next roulette bet!
